NFR Marks Gandhi Jayanti with Green Initiatives and Swachhata Drive

Guwahati: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) observed the 156th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi today with solemnity and reverence across its establishments.

At the NFR Headquarters in Maligaon, Chetan Kumar Shrivastava, General Manager, led the commemoration by lighting the ceremonial lamp and offering floral tributes to the Father of the Nation. At the same time, Arun Kumar Chaudhary, General Manager of NFR (Construction), paid homage at Nirman Vatika, adjacent to his office complex.

Senior officials and staff members across various locations participated in the event, recalling Gandhiji’s values of truth, non-violence, cleanliness, and selfless service. A tree plantation drive was also undertaken at Maligaon, where both General Managers and senior officials planted saplings to mark the occasion.

In line with Swachhata Hi Seva 2025, NFR launched a significant green initiative for rail passengers. On Gandhi Jayanti, travelers on 29 Mail/Express trains originating from stations such as Naharlagun, Agartala, Silchar, Kishanganj, Alipurduar, and Guwahati received compostable bedroll bags developed by IIT Guwahati.

These eco-friendly bags, already introduced in 26 Mail/Express trains since September 17, are made from renewable resources, non-toxic, and decompose naturally without leaving harmful residues. The initiative aims to reduce single-use plastic and promote waste segregation. The State Bank of India has fully sponsored the project under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme, making it a Net Zero cost project for NFR.

In parallel, the Ministry of Railways has launched Special Campaign 5.0 (October 2–31, 2025) to institutionalize cleanliness across government offices, including railways. The campaign focuses on scrap disposal, e-waste management, space optimization, e-file reviews, grievance redressal, and waste-to-wealth projects.

As part of the campaign, cleanliness drives will be carried out, and citizen-centric ‘Amrit Samwad’ programmes will be organized at major stations, including the 105 Amrit Bharat Stations, to encourage public participation in sustainable practices.

Through these initiatives, NFR reaffirmed its commitment to Mahatma Gandhi’s vision of a clean and self-reliant India while taking forward its mission to promote eco-friendly operations and environmental preservation.
