NIA Charges Two More in Assam IED Case, Accused Count Rises to Five

Guwahati, Jan 11: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed charges against two more individuals in connection with the seizure of improvised explosive devices (IEDs during Assam’s Independence Day celebrations in 2024, taking the total number of accused in the case to five.

Bhargab Gogoi and Sumu Gogoi, both residents of Dibrugarh district, were arrested in June 2025 after investigators uncovered their alleged role in financing the bomb plot. The NIA submitted a supplementary chargesheet against them before the Special Court in Guwahati on January 8, invoking provisions of the Indian Penal Code, the Explosive Substances Act and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

According to the agency, the two accused provided financial support to Jahnu Boruah, a previously chargesheeted accused who had confessed to planting four of the 11 IEDs recovered by Assam Police in August 2024. The devices were allegedly planted as part of a coordinated attempt to disrupt Independence Day celebrations, following a boycott call issued by ULFA(I) chief Paresh Baruah.

The case was initially registered at Dispur Police Station by Assam Police before being handed over to the NIA in September 2024. Investigators have described the incident as part of a larger conspiracy by ULFA(I) to target the Indian state through synchronised attacks across Assam.

The NIA had earlier chargesheeted three accused in June last year. Officials said investigations into the terror financing network and operational planning behind the plot are still underway.
