NIA Conducts Raids Across Tripura and Meghalaya in Al-Qaeda Terror Conspiracy Case

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) carried out a series of coordinated raids across Tripura, Meghalaya, and three other states in connection with an ongoing probe into an Al-Qaeda-linked terror conspiracy involving illegal Bangladeshi immigrants.

According to official reports, the searches were conducted on November 12 at 10 locations across West Bengal, Tripura, Meghalaya, Haryana, and Gujarat, targeting premises associated with the suspects and their close associates. Several digital devices and incriminating documents were seized during the operation and have been sent for forensic examination.

The case, registered as RC-19/2023/NIA/DLI (Al-Qaida Gujarat case), was initiated by the NIA in June 2023 under multiple provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, the Indian Penal Code, and the Foreigners Act.

Investigations have identified four Bangladeshi nationals — Mohd. Sojibmiyan, Munna Khalid Ansari, Azarul Islam, and Abdul Latif — as key conspirators who allegedly illegally infiltrated India using forged identity documents. The NIA has linked them to the proscribed Al-Qaeda terrorist organisation.

According to the agency’s statement, the accused were involved in the collection and transfer of funds to Al-Qaeda operatives in Bangladesh and were also motivating Muslim youth toward extremist ideologies.

The investigation made a major breakthrough on November 10, 2023, when the NIA filed a chargesheet against five accused persons before the NIA Special Court in Ahmedabad. The agency continues its efforts to dismantle the terror network’s presence, financial channels, and cross-border linkages.

Officials said the NIA remains focused on preventing further infiltration attempts through the northeastern corridor, which has been identified as a key route for illegal cross-border movements and extremist activities.
