Guwahati, May 26: BJP leader Nilima Devi on May 26 voiced support for women’s reservation, stating that the move would encourage wider participation of women in politics and create more opportunities for their advancement in public life.
Speaking to reporters, Devi said the implementation of the women’s reservation law would help increase the number of women representatives in legislative institutions and strengthen their role in the political process.
She noted that the current level of women’s representation remained limited and said reservation could play an important role in addressing that gap. “Today there are only a few women representatives. If reservation is implemented, more women will come into politics and it will help women progress,” she said.
Devi also welcomed support shown by Congress leaders in Assam towards the women’s reservation legislation, despite opposition expressed by the party at the national level.
She said the issue should be viewed beyond political lines and described it as a step that would benefit all sections of society. “This is not only good for the BJP, but for all political parties and for the country,” she said.
Commenting on the political landscape in Assam, Devi pointed out that women currently hold only a limited number of seats in the state and stressed the need for greater representation and stronger electoral participation of women candidates in future elections.
