Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on November 8 laid the foundation stone for the Swahid Kanaklata Barua State University, Assam’s first institution dedicated exclusively to technical and vocational education and training.
The university, to be built at a cost of ₹415 crore, will be set up over 241 acres of land at Bholaguri in Gohpur, Biswanath district. It will include academic blocks for 2,000 students, hostels for 1,620 students, residential quarters, a guest house, and a student facility centre.
Designed to develop a skilled and innovation-driven workforce, the university will offer advanced courses in fields such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, blockchain, quantum computing, and smart city systems.
Sitharaman, during her two-day visit to Assam, said the project marks a major step towards creating opportunities for youth in emerging technology sectors and enhancing the state’s position as a centre for skill-based higher education.
