Nishanta Bordoloi Plays Key Role in India’s Under-19 World Cup Triumph

Guwahati: Nishanta Bordoloi has steadily carved a niche for himself in Indian cricket, emerging as a respected strength and conditioning specialist who works closely with both young talents and senior players to meet the growing physical demands of the modern game. The former Assam cricketer recently played a key role in India’s triumph at the ICC Under-19 World Cup, where the team defeated England by 100 runs in the final at Harare on February 6 to clinch a record sixth title. Another former Assam player, Subhadeep Ghosh, was part of the support staff as fielding coach.

While the World Cup victory was a proud moment, Bordoloi stressed that the process mattered more than the result. Speaking to The Assam Rising, he said the biggest takeaway was the learning and discipline developed through the journey. He described working with the young squad as deeply rewarding, highlighting their eagerness to learn and improve throughout the tournament.

Bordoloi also praised the experienced support staff, which included VVS Laxman, Sunil Joshi and Hrishikesh Kanitkar, for creating a balanced and focused environment. On mentoring 14-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, he emphasised careful workload management and building strong physical foundations.

Since retiring in 2008, Bordoloi has worked with the National Cricket Academy, Ranji teams and IPL franchises, and played a crucial role in rehabilitation programmes, including monitoring Rishabh Pant’s recovery after his 2022 accident.
