No Permanent Structures on Lumpongdeng Island, Says Conrad Sangma Amid Tourism Concerns

Shillong, April 10: Conrad K Sangma has moved to ease public concerns surrounding proposed activities at Lumpongdeng Island, asserting that no permanent construction will be permitted on the ecologically sensitive site.

In a public statement, the Chief Minister clarified that the agreement between the government and the tourism department clearly prohibits the establishment of any permanent structures on the island. He dismissed fears of large-scale concrete development as entirely unfounded.

Sangma explained that only temporary setups, including shamianas, pandals, and small stalls, would be allowed for limited durations during specific events. These installations, he said, would be dismantled within a week to ten days after the conclusion of such programmes to minimise any environmental impact.

He further noted that while certain permissions under forest regulations may allow restricted activity, the state government has adopted a firm stance against any lasting construction. The objective, he emphasised, is to safeguard the island’s fragile ecosystem, including its natural flora and fauna.

Responding to what he described as misinformation circulating among the public, Sangma urged people not to be misled by claims suggesting extensive development plans. He reiterated that the government remains committed to promoting tourism in a sustainable manner while ensuring environmental conservation remains a top priority.

The clarification comes at a time when discussions around ecological preservation and responsible tourism are gaining momentum in Meghalaya.
