Shillong, Jan 23: Meghalaya’s Nongkseh Sports Social and Cultural Club crowned an impressive campaign by lifting the 11th All India Chief Minister’s International Gold Cup Football Tournament after edging past BSF (Jalandhar) 1–0 in the final at Jorethang in South Sikkim. The closely fought title clash was decided early in the second half, with the Shillong-based side showing composure and control to seal the prestigious trophy.
The defining moment arrived in the 51st minute when Kynsaibor Lhuid struck the winning goal, breaking BSF’s resistance and tilting the contest in Nongkseh’s favour. From there on, Nongkseh dictated the rhythm of the game, maintaining possession and limiting their opponents’ attacking opportunities. Goalkeeper Daraphun Talang played a crucial role at the back, producing a timely save to deny BSF their lone shot on target and preserve the narrow lead.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma hailed the achievement, congratulating the team through a social media post in which he described the triumph as a “शानदार victory.” He praised Nongkseh’s discipline, teamwork and sportsmanship during the tournament, calling the title win well earned and encouraging the players to continue their strong performances.
Individual honours also went Nongkseh’s way, with Kynsai being named Man of the Tournament and awarded a Tata Tiago. The champions walked away with the trophy and a cash prize of ₹20 lakh, capping an unbeaten run that saw them overcome Himalayan Gangtok, Eastern Railway, NEROCA FC and Red Panda FC on their road to the final.
The title has further elevated Nongkseh’s profile on the national stage. Reflecting the growing interest in the club, Indian Super League outfit NorthEast United FC has invited Nongkseh for a pre-season friendly scheduled for February 8 at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium. The Gold Cup victory stands as another significant milestone for the Meghalaya side, highlighting its rising stature in Indian football.
