Guwahati: In a landmark move that could redefine the political dynamics of India’s Northeast, a group of prominent regional leaders—including Meghalaya Chief Minister and NPP president Conrad K. Sangma, Tipra Motha founder Pradyut Bikram Manikya Debbarma, Nagaland minister Mmhonlumo Kikon, and People’s Party Assam (PPA) founder Daniel Langthasa—have announced the formation of a new regional political alliance aimed at giving the region “a collective voice.”
The announcement came after a high-level meeting at the Constitution Club of India in New Delhi, where leaders discussed what they called “a shared vision for the future of the Northeast.” A nine-member committee, headed by James Sangma, will now draft the new party’s constitution, flag, and organisational framework within 45 days.

“We are not here to fight any political party—our focus is on the people,” Conrad Sangma said after the meeting, adding that the alliance seeks to unify the aspirations of the region. Pradyut Manikya echoed the sentiment, saying, “We may have different views, but this is about standing up together for our people with conviction and truth.”
The leaders emphasised that protection of land rights, identity, and regional unity would be at the heart of the new front’s agenda.
Describing the initiative as a “historic step”, the joint statement said, “For too long, we have spoken from different platforms. It’s time the Northeast speaks with one strong voice.”
Political analysts believe the formation of this front could mark a turning point in Northeast politics, long dominated by fragmented regional forces.
