Nagaon: Noted manuscript artist, researcher and founder of Art Village, Nagaon, Sujit Das has been awarded the prestigious Senior Fellowship (2025–26) by the Centre for Cultural Resources and Training (CCRT) under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The fellowship has been awarded in recognition of his research, documentation, preservation and creative work on manuscript painting (Puthi Chitra), one of Assam’s significant traditional art forms. It may be mentioned that Das had earlier received the CCRT Junior Fellowship during 2014–15 for the same subject. Since then, he has been consistently working towards the revival, preservation, training and global promotion of this ancient artistic tradition of Assam.
Through his artistic practice, Sujit Das has successfully established a distinct identity for Assam’s Puthi Chitra on the international stage. He has already showcased this traditional art form in 35 countries across the world, including the United Kingdom, China and Russia, through various art exhibitions, cultural programmes and international exchange initiatives. His contribution to art education and training is equally noteworthy. Recently, he served as a Mentor at the National Workshop on Indian Painting held at Chanakya University, Bengaluru, where he imparted training on Assam’s Puthi Chitra to students from various art colleges across India, covering its history, aesthetics, artistic characteristics, materials and practical techniques.

In addition, his artworks have been exhibited in numerous national and international exhibitions. Significantly, his work will soon be displayed at the National Exhibition of Lalit Kala Akademi, which is considered an important recognition for Assam’s Puthi Chitra tradition. This achievement is not merely a personal milestone for Sujit Das; it is also a matter of pride for Assam’s artistic and cultural community. The recognition is expected to open new avenues for research, preservation, training and global dissemination of Assam’s Puthi Chitra. The honour is regarded as a significant national recognition of Das’s long-standing dedication in bringing one of Assam’s invaluable cultural traditions closer to younger generations and to the international community.
