Nothing Gained Without a Movement: Samujjal Bhattacharya Urges Political Restraint on Zubeen’s Legacy

Guwahati: In a stern reminder that echoes decades of Assamese history, Chief Advisor of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) Dr. Samujjal Bhattacharya has issued a powerful statement, asserting that “Nothing is gained in Assam without a movement.” The remark comes amidst heightened political tensions and public outcry surrounding the tragic and still-investigated death of cultural icon, singer Zubeen Garg.

Dr. Bhattacharya, a key figure in the pivotal Assam Movement, specifically called on the state’s political players—both ruling and opposition—to cease exploiting the late singer’s name for political gain, stating emphatically: “The ruling and opposition parties should not politicize Zubeen Garg.”

The call to de-politicize Zubeen Garg’s name is particularly resonant as the popular singer, who tragically passed away last month, was himself a vocal, non-political figure often seen as a moral compass for the Assamese youth.

Garg was known for his outspoken nature on social issues, corruption, and his disillusionment with mainstream politics, famously releasing the protest song “Politics Nokoriba Bandhu” (Don’t do politics, my friend).

Following his sudden death in Singapore, widespread suspicion, public anger, and a demand for a swift, transparent probe have gripped the state. Protests demanding justice have erupted, leading to arrests and a full-fledged Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe.

However, the tragedy has rapidly become a flashpoint for both the ruling party and the opposition, who have launched campaigns and held meetings dedicated to the singer, leading to accusations from various quarters that Zubeen’s legacy is being appropriated ahead of the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections.
