IMPHAL, July 25: National People’s Party (NPP) president and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday said public expectations from the party in Manipur had grown considerably and expressed confidence that the NPP would emerge as a stronger political force in the 2027 Assembly elections.
Addressing a press conference after the party’s Annual Convention at the MFSDS Hall in Imphal, Sangma said the NPP was committed to strengthening its organisational structure across the state while continuing efforts to support peace and stability in violence-affected Manipur.
During his two-day visit, Sangma inaugurated the party’s state office, attended the annual convention and reviewed the NPP’s preparations for the 2027 Assembly polls. He also met party functionaries and interacted with representatives from different sections of society to discuss the prevailing situation in the state, the condition of internally displaced persons, economic challenges and measures needed to restore lasting peace.
Sangma said governments must take responsibility for addressing the crisis but added that political parties also had an important role in promoting reconciliation. He described the situation in Manipur as complex and said there was no simple solution, stressing that sustained dialogue and trust-building among communities were essential for long-term peace.
He further said any resolution of the conflict should protect national security while ensuring that the interests and welfare of the people of Manipur were not overlooked. According to him, a balanced approach was necessary to address the crisis effectively.
Speaking about the party’s electoral prospects, Sangma said the NPP had steadily expanded its presence in Manipur since its first electoral contest in 2017. He described the party as a regional political force with a deep understanding of the Northeast and said growing public expectations reflected a desire for an alternative political platform.
Sangma added that the NPP intended to strengthen its organisational network across all Assembly constituencies in Manipur, while a decision on the number of seats the party would contest in the 2027 elections would be taken at a later stage.
