Numal Momin Accuses Congress of ‘Appeasement Politics’, Links Party to Demographic Imbalance in Assam

Assam Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker Numal Momin on December 7 launched a strong criticism of the Congress, alleging that the party’s long-standing political approach encouraged demographic shifts in the state. Speaking to reporters, Momin claimed that Congress had consistently practised what he described as “appeasement politics”, asserting that its policies facilitated Bangladeshi infiltration and contributed to changes in Assam’s socio-political landscape.

Momin argued that the Congress, despite ruling the state for 25 years, had not recognised the contribution of those who lost their lives during the Assam Movement. He noted that the six-year agitation, centred on safeguarding Assamese identity, witnessed the deaths of hundreds of people, yet the previous government did not formally honour the martyrs. According to him, “They did not take out even a few moments to pay respects to the martyrs of the Assam movement.”

Contrasting this with the current regime, the Deputy Speaker said the BJP-led government over the past decade had taken concrete steps to acknowledge the historical struggle. He pointed out that the government had built a memorial dedicated to the martyrs, reflecting its stated commitment to preserving the legacy of the movement.

Momin’s remarks come amid continuing political debates in Assam over identity, illegal immigration and the unresolved historical questions surrounding the Assam Movement, issues which remain central to both state politics and public discourse.
