Dhubri: A cultural event organized to mark the birthday of popular Assamese singer and actor Zubeen Garg has triggered widespread outrage after an obscene dance performance was allegedly staged under the banner of celebration. The incident took place at Jhaler Alga in Gauripur, where Jibon Jyoti Club had arranged the programme.
According to locals, what was expected to be a respectful tribute to the beloved artist took an unexpected turn when performers engaged in vulgar dance acts on stage, drawing sharp criticism from attendees and community members. Videos of the event began circulating soon after, with many describing the act as an “insult to Zubeen Garg” and “an unacceptable misuse of a cultural platform.”
Following public uproar, Gauripur Police acted swiftly and arrested one of the organizers late last night. The arrested individual has been identified as Monnaf Ali, a resident of Jhaler Alga and an active member of the event organizing committee. Police sources have confirmed that a marathon interrogation is underway to determine who authorized the performers, who funded the event, and whether the obscene elements were intentional or planned. Further arrests have not been ruled out.
