A man was killed and 11 others were injured, including five who remain in critical condition, after a Swift Dzire car collided head-on with an auto-rickshaw in the Khatkhati area of Moran in Assam’s Dibrugarh district on July 5.
The deceased has been identified as Biren Bhumij, a resident of Sepan Tea Estate, who died at the scene due to the impact of the collision.
According to preliminary information, the Swift Dzire (AS-04-X-6168) was travelling from Sivasagar towards Moran when it allegedly crashed into the auto-rickshaw (AS-04-BC-2377), which was coming from the opposite direction. The force of the collision left the auto-rickshaw extensively damaged.
Police said the auto-rickshaw was carrying 12 passengers, including women and children. All of them sustained injuries, while five were reported to be in critical condition. Local residents, assisted by the 108 ambulance service, shifted the injured to a nearby hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment.
The Swift Dzire was occupied by four people—two men and two women. Police said none of the occupants of the car sustained any injuries in the accident.
Following the incident, Officer-in-Charge of Moran Police Station Dantejit Deori and Sub-Inspector Manashjyoti Pathak, along with a police team, reached the spot and supervised rescue and clearance operations. The damaged vehicles were removed from the highway using a crane, allowing traffic to resume.
Police have detained the driver of the Swift Dzire for questioning. Both vehicles suffered extensive damage in the crash.
A case has been registered, and an investigation is underway to determine whether overspeeding, negligence or any other factor was responsible for the accident.
