Itanagar, August 15: One person was killed, six injured and three remain missing after a Delhi-registered DI vehicle carrying 10 people plunged nearly 300 feet from a road cliff into the Lohit River in Arunachal Pradesh’s Anjaw district, officials said.
The accident occurred around 6 am on August 13 in the Sarti area along NH-113 on the Walong-Hawai road, near the India-China border.
According to the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Anjaw, the vehicle carrying 10 people, including the driver, fell from the road into a deep gorge before landing in the Lohit River. The vehicle was submerged following the accident.
The incident was reported to the District Disaster Management Officer (DDMO), Anjaw, at around 9:59 am, following which a search-and-rescue operation was launched.
The DDMA coordinated the operation with the district administration, Anjaw Police, Indian Army, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local residents and volunteers.
Six people — four men, one woman and one child — were rescued with injuries, while one woman was confirmed dead. Three people remain missing.
Authorities have requested the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to join the operation, citing the SDRF’s limited resources.
Search operations are continuing in and around the Lohit River to locate the missing persons and recover the submerged vehicle.
