Opposition Demands Answers in Assembly Over Zubeen Garg’s Death

The winter session of the Assam Legislative Assembly began with heightened tension as Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia moved an Adjournment Motion seeking explanations over the circumstances surrounding the death of music icon Zubeen Garg and what he described as the government’s continued silence on the matter.

Addressing the House, Saikia said Zubeen Garg was not only a prominent singer but a cultural symbol whose influence stretched far beyond the state. He argued that any questions over his safety and final moments deserved urgent attention and transparency from the government.

Saikia questioned why no official security arrangements were made for the artist during his Singapore visit despite his participation in a major international programme. He asked why dedicated security personnel were not assigned to him and whether negligence played a role.

The Opposition leader also raised concerns over what he alleged was poor coordination and unnecessary delay in transporting Zubeen Garg’s mortal remains from Singapore to Guwahati. He demanded clarity on who oversaw the arrangements and why the response from authorities appeared slow during what he termed a deeply emotional and sensitive time for Assam.

Saikia stressed that the event Zubeen Garg attended was part of the Northeast Festival, conducted under the Ministry of External Affairs. He argued that both the Central and Assam Governments were jointly accountable and should not distance themselves from the developments.

The session continued under a charged atmosphere as the issue remains a point of public frustration and emotional upheaval across the state.
