Guwahati, May 22: Lakshman Prasad Acharya on May 22 presented the vision and priorities of the newly elected BJP-led government for the next five years during his inaugural address in the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly, while Opposition members staged a protest and walked out over issues they said had not been adequately addressed.
Shortly after the Governor began speaking on the second day of the Assembly session, legislators from the Indian National Congress and Raijor Dal moved into the Well of the House, raising slogans over inflation and rising prices of essential commodities.
Congress members also displayed placards before leaving the House in protest.
The two Raijor Dal legislators, led by Akhil Gogoi, initially remained inside the Assembly and continued voicing objections while the Governor proceeded with his address. The party later exited after submitting a memorandum outlining its demands.
During his speech, Acharya said the BJP-led NDA government securing a third consecutive term reflected public confidence in its governance model centred on peace, economic growth and inclusive development.
“This mandate reflects the people’s endorsement of peace, economic stability and inclusive development pursued over the past ten years,” the Governor said, adding that the government’s efforts towards restoring peace had delivered “substantial and historic” results.
Acharya also appealed to citizens to exercise restraint in discretionary spending, echoing the call for austerity made by Narendra Modi.
The Governor further welcomed the proposed introduction of the Uniform Civil Code legislation during the current Assembly session, stating that such a measure would help strengthen social harmony, promote justice and gender equality, and contribute towards building a progressive society.
