Sualkuchi, Aug. 7: More than 100 athletes participated in the 5th National Javelin Day-2026 celebrations and the Kamrup district-level javelin throw competition held at Madhav Dev Khetra in Sualkuchi on Friday.
The event was organised by the Sports Academy of Sualkuchi in collaboration with the Kamrup District Sports Association under the guidance of the Assam Athletics Association and the Athletics Federation of India.
Athletes from across Kamrup district, including students from more than 10 schools, Sualkuchi College and several sports academies, competed in various age categories.
The competition was inaugurated by Kamrup Sub-Divisional Sports Officer Pankaj Bharali, who said Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra’s achievements had inspired a new generation of javelin throwers and encouraged young athletes to pursue excellence in the sport.
The prize distribution ceremony was attended by Hajo-Sualkuchi MLA Prakash Chandra Das, who said Neeraj Chopra had given Indian javelin global recognition and lauded the organisers for promoting athletics at the grassroots level. He said such initiatives would provide rural sporting talent with greater opportunities to excel.
Dhiraj Mahanta, Uttam Brahma and Subal Ramchiary also attended the ceremony and presented medals to the winners.
The organisers said the event aimed to promote javelin throw in Assam, identify emerging talent and encourage greater participation in athletics among young people.
