Over 100 Leaders, Including BJP Members, Join Congress Ahead of Assam Assembly Polls

Guwahati: In what can be termed as a big boost ahead of the Assembly elections in the State, early next year, more than 100 people including several leaders from the BJP, joined the Congress party today at Rajiv Bhawan, drawn by the party’s principles and ideologies. 

Present during the occasion were Gaurav Gogoi, President, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), Ripun Bora, Chairman, Election Management Committee, APCC, Debabrat Saikia, Leader of Opposition, Assam Legislative Assembly, Bhupen Borah, Chairman, Election Campaign Committee, APCC, Pradyut Bordoloi, MP, Nagaon, Mira Borthakur, President, Assam Mahila Pradesh Congress amongst others. 

Among those prominent who joined the Congress included Kartik Sinha, BJP Politician and a former MLA, Arkasish Chaliha, Member, BJP, State Policy Research Department, Batash Orang, former President, BJP Sonitpur, Nihar Ranjan Gogoi, National Youth Executive and Member, National People’s Party (NPP).

The Congress also welcomed Nabajyoti Konwar, senior advocate, Gauhati High Court, Dr Amit Kumar Kalwar, former assistant professor, Silchar Medical College apart from Udit Phukan, current General Secretary, Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad, Lakhimpur. 

Apart from it, several members from the All Assam Christian Forum also joined the Congress formally today. 

Speaking to the Assam Rising, Gaurav Gogoi, President, APCC said, “It marks a significant day for Congress as people are embracing the party with open arms. People are fed up with the BJP and their divisive politics and hoping for the Congress to bring change and to build a new future for Assam”.

Debabrat Saikia, leader of Opposition, while speaking to the Assam Rising said, “People are not happy with the BJP. I’m happy that our Congress family is growing. Today’s joining shows people’s faith in our Congress party and their belief that Congress is the only alternative to the BJP in 2026”.
