The Food and Civil Supplies Department seized more than 100 domestic and commercial LPG cylinders allegedly stored illegally at a shop in Sivasagar on October 13, citing safety risks as the premises are located beneath a private school and beside residential areas.
The operation at Dewan Stove, a gas burner repair shop in Purana Patti, followed a tip-off and reports of a persistent gas smell. A team led by Supply Department Superintendent Uttam Nazir seized the cylinders and a device allegedly used to transfer gas between them.
Shop owner Abdur Rashid Ahmed reportedly told officials that gas agencies in Sivasagar had supplied the cylinders. He also allegedly admitted transferring gas from filled cylinders into empty ones, a practice that can cause leaks, fires and explosions.
The department has filed a written complaint against Ahmed with the district commissioner. The shop occupies the ground floor of a building with a private school above it and residential settlements on both sides.
Further details of the investigation and any action against those allegedly involved are awaited.
