Shillong, Jan 21: More than 800 young job aspirants participated in the NIELIT Job Fair 2026 held in Shillong on January 20, reflecting the strong demand for employment and skill-based opportunities across the region. The one-day event took place at the Soso Tham Auditorium and attracted candidates from East Khasi Hills and other districts, including graduates, diploma holders and early-career professionals seeking immediate job placements.
Over 18 companies took part in the fair, conducting on-the-spot interviews throughout the day. Several recruiters shortlisted candidates during the event itself, with some employers carrying out multiple rounds of interviews to fast-track the selection process. Hiring demand was particularly high for entry-level and mid-level positions in sectors such as information technology, hardware services, security, education, automotive services, wellness, customer support and staffing solutions.
Officials associated with the job fair said the large turnout pointed to growing job awareness among young people and the increasing importance of local recruitment platforms. Employers noted a steady pool of candidates with basic technical competencies, while also observing strong interest in roles related to customer service, sales and operations.
In addition to interviews, the fair offered career counselling, résumé assessment and interview preparation support. The Divisional Employment Exchange played a key role in matching candidate profiles with suitable openings, helping participants better understand opportunities aligned with their skills and experience.
Now an annual initiative in Shillong, the NIELIT Job Fair is increasingly viewed as an important link between employers and the local workforce. Organisers said insights gathered from recruiters would be used to plan targeted training programmes to bridge skill gaps identified during the event, underscoring the role of such fairs in addressing unemployment and underemployment among the region’s youth.
