Overloading, Illegal Dumper Modifications Alleged on Gauripur Bypass Project

Dhubri: Serious allegations of overloading and illegal modification of heavy vehicles have emerged during the construction of the 10-km Gauripur Bypass in Assam’s Dhubri district, triggering concern among local residents and daily commuters.

The bypass, stretching from Dumardoha Pt-II to Baladmara via Khudimari, Fulkumari and Geramari, has reportedly witnessed frequent movement of fly-ash dumpers that are allegedly operating beyond permitted load limits. Locals claim many of these dumpers have been illegally altered, with extra metal sheets welded onto their cargo bodies to increase carrying capacity.

Residents say such modifications, reportedly carried out at local workshops, allow operators to transport more material per trip, boosting profits at the cost of public safety. Visual evidence shared by commuters shows several dumpers with unusually high sidewalls, raising alarms about enforcement lapses.

Road safety experts warn that overloading and unauthorised structural changes can make vehicles highly unstable. The increased height and weight raise the centre of gravity, significantly heightening the risk of overturning—especially on curves, narrow stretches, and uneven construction zones along the bypass route.

Local people have expressed fear that if the practice continues unchecked, it could lead to serious accidents, loss of lives, and damage to newly built road infrastructure. They have urged the district administration and transport authorities to conduct strict checks, curb illegal modifications, and ensure adherence to safety norms to prevent potential mishaps.
