Parked Trucks on NH-715 in Nagaon Raise Questions Over Enforcement of Highway Safety Order

Nagaon, May 29: Three heavy commercial vehicles parked along National Highway 715 at Kuwaritol in Assam’s Nagaon district for several days have triggered concerns over the enforcement of a district directive aimed at preventing accidents on National Highways.

The Nagaon District Commissioner had issued an order on May 19, following directions from the Supreme Court, prohibiting the parking of heavy and commercial vehicles on National Highways except at designated locations. The directive was introduced to strengthen road safety measures and minimise accident risks.

Despite the order, the vehicles continue to remain parked near the Kaliabor Police Outpost and Kuwaritol Higher Secondary School. Local residents alleged that the trucks have been stationed at the location for the past three to four days without any warning signs, reflectors or other safety arrangements.

The restriction order, issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), clearly bars heavy and commercial vehicles from being parked on National Highways under any circumstances and provides for strict legal action against violators.

The incident has raised concerns among residents over the effectiveness of enforcement measures in the Kaliabor subdivision, with allegations that the district administration’s safety directive is not being properly implemented on the ground.

Authorities are yet to issue any official statement regarding the alleged violation or clarify what action will be taken to remove the vehicles from the highway stretch.
