Itanagar, May 22: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Friday urged renewed collective action towards biodiversity conservation and ecosystem protection, stressing that the health of human communities remains closely tied to the well-being of the natural environment.
Marking the observance of the International Day for Biological Diversity, Khandu called for stronger commitments to sustainable living and ecological preservation. In a message shared on X, he said the occasion serves as an important reminder of the need to safeguard the planet’s rich diversity of life.
Referring to this year’s theme, “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development”, the Chief Minister highlighted the importance of maintaining a balance between environmental protection and development goals. He said long-term progress can only be achieved when ecological sustainability forms part of the growth process.
“The well-being of humanity is deeply interconnected with the health of our ecosystems,” Khandu stated, emphasising the need for greater environmental responsibility.
Known as part of the Eastern Himalayan biodiversity hotspot, Arunachal Pradesh is home to extensive forest cover, rich wildlife diversity, rare plant species and unique tribal traditions. Officials noted that environmental conservation continues to remain a significant component of the state’s broader development strategy amid ongoing infrastructure and economic expansion initiatives.
Observed annually on May 22, the International Day for Biological Diversity aims to raise awareness about the conservation of ecosystems and the sustainable use of natural resources. In recent years, Arunachal Pradesh has also advanced several initiatives centred on community-led conservation, sustainable tourism, wildlife protection and climate-resilient development.
