Pema Khandu strongly condemned the alleged racial abuse of three women from Arunachal Pradesh residing in Malviya Nagar, South Delhi, describing the incident as “shameful” and “absolutely unacceptable”.
Taking serious note of the matter, the Chief Minister said he had personally spoken with the Commissioner of Delhi Police to ensure prompt and strict action. In a post on X, he asserted that such behaviour had no place in society and assured that the accused, who were currently absconding, would be apprehended at the earliest and dealt with in accordance with the law. He added that the state stood firmly with the three women and that their safety, dignity and justice remained the government’s highest priority.
Police confirmed that a case had been registered at Malviya Nagar Police Station against two local residents for allegedly racially abusing and criminally intimidating the women tenants from the Northeast. An FIR was lodged under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Section 79 (word, gesture, or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), Section 351(2) (criminal intimidation), Section 196 (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds such as religion, race, or place of birth), along with provisions related to acts done with common intention.
The accused were identified as Harsh Singh and his wife, Ruby Jain, both residents of Malviya Nagar.
According to officials, the incident occurred on February 20 at around 3:30 pm when the three women were supervising electrical installation work in their rented accommodation. Dust from drilling work allegedly entered the apartment below, leading to a confrontation between the tenants and their neighbours. The complainants alleged that racial remarks were made, causing mental harassment and humiliation. No physical injuries were reported.
Further legal proceedings were underway.
