Guwahati: Assam Agriculture and Irrigation Minister Pijush Hazarika on Saturday reviewed the state’s emerging makhana cultivation and processing sector during a visit to Kamrup (Metropolitan) district. Hazarika visited Assam Makhana Udyog, a processing unit at Bamphor in Topatoli, along with MLA Dr Tapan Kumar Gogoi. He examined the processing and value-addition activities and took stock of the infrastructure involved in developing the crop’s value chain.

The minister later visited the Durung area to inspect makhana cultivation and interacted with local farmers. During the interaction, farmers shared their experiences, challenges and requirements related to cultivation and marketing. Hazarika highlighted the potential of makhana as an emerging agricultural sector in Assam and stressed the need for greater use of technology, improved processing infrastructure and stronger market linkages.
He said strengthening the entire value chain—from cultivation and processing to marketing—would be crucial to helping farmers secure better economic returns from the crop. The visit is expected to provide further impetus to efforts aimed at expanding makhana cultivation in Assam while creating new income opportunities for farmers and strengthening the state’s agricultural economy.
