Guwahati : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday arrived in Assam for a two-day visit, joining the grand centenary celebrations of the legendary singer, lyricist and cultural icon Dr. Bhupen Hazarika at the Veterinary College Field in Khanapara, Guwahati.
Welcomed at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport by Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and state officials, the Prime Minister made his way directly to the event, where hundreds of artists came together in a musical tribute to Hazarika’s legacy.

Speaking on the occasion, PM Modi underscored Bhupen Hazarika’s enduring role in promoting unity, cultural integrity, and hope for the North East. He said that even during turbulent times, Hazarika’s songs spoke of solidarity and peaceful coexistence—an inspiration for today’s India to recognize and embrace its diversity.

As part of the event, a biography release was planned, along with the launch and foundation-laying of infrastructure and development projects valued at over Rs 19,000 crore across Assam. Modi is expected to visit Mangaldoi in Darrang district and Numaligarh in Golaghat district the next day, where he will inaugurate and lay foundation stones for multiple projects.

The celebrations at Khanapara reflect both tribute to Bhupen “Bhupen Da” Hazarika’s towering contributions to Indian music and culture and the government’s efforts to intertwine cultural commemoration with developmental progress.
