New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on Monday. The meeting focused on India-Iran bilateral relations and the evolving situation in West Asia. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, both leaders exchanged views on recent developments in the region, with Modi reiterating India’s position that outstanding issues should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.

Modi also stressed the need for continued efforts to ensure lasting peace and stability in West Asia. He called for the protection of freedom of navigation and commerce and emphasised that civilians, civilian infrastructure, commercial shipping and seafarers must not be targeted. The talks also covered the strengthening of bilateral cooperation. Modi said India was keen to expand and diversify its trade basket with Iran and reaffirmed New Delhi’s commitment to strengthening its longstanding relationship with Tehran.
The meeting assumes significance amid continuing tensions in West Asia and concerns over regional stability and commercial shipping routes. India also reiterated its readiness to work closely with Iran through multilateral platforms, including the SCO and BRICS. Modi extended an invitation to Pezeshkian to visit India for the upcoming BRICS Summit. The meeting was held during Modi’s two-day visit to Kyrgyzstan for the 26th SCO Summit, where he is scheduled to participate alongside leaders of other member states.
