PM Modi Pays Tribute to Assam Movement Martyrs on Swahid Diwas, Reaffirms Commitment to State’s Progress

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 10 paid solemn homage to the martyrs of the Assam Movement on Swahid Diwas, recalling their sacrifice and reiterating the Union Government’s dedication to fulfilling their aspirations for the State. In a message shared on social media, the Prime Minister said the movement would always hold a prominent place in India’s history and highlighted the Centre’s resolve to strengthen Assam’s cultural identity and ensure the State’s comprehensive development.

Responding to the Prime Minister’s remarks, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma endorsed the sentiment, describing the sacrifices of the movement’s martyrs as a guiding force in the State’s ongoing developmental journey. He said that under the Prime Minister’s leadership, the government remains committed to advancing the vision laid down by those who fought for Assam’s rights.

Reflecting on the turmoil of that period, the Chief Minister noted that 860 youths and citizens had lost their lives at the hands of the government in power at the time. He stated that these individuals were killed for demanding a secure Assam, protesting against illegal infiltration, and asserting their right to live with dignity. Sarma said that the memory of their struggle continues to shape the State’s trajectory and strengthens its resolve to build a future aligned with the ideals of the Assam Movement.
