Guwahati, Feb 15: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on February 15 announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone for the ambitious Silchar–Shillong–Guwahati High-Speed Corridor during his visit to Assam in March.
Addressing a press conference, the Chief Minister said the project, estimated at around ₹22,864 crore, represents one of the largest highway infrastructure investments made by the Central Government in the Northeast. He described the corridor as a transformative initiative poised to significantly enhance connectivity across Assam and Meghalaya.
Once completed, the high-speed corridor is expected to cut travel time between Guwahati and Silchar to approximately 4.5 to 5 hours, ensuring faster, safer and more efficient transportation. The improved road network is also projected to stimulate trade, tourism and broader economic growth in the region.
The announcement forms part of the state government’s wider infrastructure expansion strategy aimed at strengthening road connectivity and deepening regional integration across the Northeast.
