Darrang: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday cautioned against what he termed deliberate attempts to alter the demographics of India’s border regions, describing the trend as a “grave threat” to national security.
Addressing a public gathering in Assam’s Darrang, the Prime Minister announced the launch of a nationwide “demography mission” aimed at preventing infiltration-driven population changes in sensitive districts. He said the initiative is part of the BJP government’s larger agenda to safeguard territorial integrity and protect citizens from illegal entrants.

Modi directly challenged the Opposition, accusing them of sheltering or defending infiltrators. “Show what you have done compared with the efforts we have made,” he said, warning that those who provide sanctuary “will have to pay the price” and that the nation would not forgive such actions.
Framing the issue as central to national security, Modi urged stricter administrative measures in border areas and called for political accountability. He reiterated that BJP policies place the protection of Indian citizens and the unity of the nation above all else.

Local officials at the rally underlined the government’s commitment to strengthening border management, citing plans for enhanced verification and enforcement mechanisms. Political reactions from civil society and opposition leaders are expected in the coming days, likely setting the stage for a wider debate on immigration, citizenship verification, and human rights in border districts.
