Chaygaon, June 1: A significant development has emerged in a POCSO case in Assam’s Chaygaon after an accused person sustained injuries during a police operation while allegedly attempting to escape from custody.
The accused, identified as 35-year-old Akkas Ali, suffered a gunshot injury during the operation conducted as part of an ongoing investigation into a sexual assault case involving a minor.
According to police sources, Akkas Ali was being taken for investigation-related procedures when he allegedly attempted to flee. During the escape bid, he reportedly attacked police personnel and tried to evade custody, prompting officers to take action.
Police said they opened fire to prevent his escape, resulting in the accused sustaining a bullet injury to his left leg. He was immediately secured by the police and provided medical attention.
Following the incident, Akkas Ali was admitted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where he is undergoing treatment under police supervision.
The accused had earlier been arrested in connection with an alleged sexual assault case involving a 10-year-old girl under the provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The case had attracted considerable attention, and investigators were continuing their probe when the encounter took place.
Authorities have stated that legal proceedings in the sexual assault case will continue in accordance with the law. An inquiry into the encounter is also expected to be conducted as part of standard procedures followed in such incidents.
Police and district administration officials are yet to release further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the operation.
