Police Arrest Seven After Late-Night Armed Brawl and Hooliganism in Guwahati’s Ganeshguri

Guwahati, Feb 27: Dispur Police have apprehended seven individuals, including the son of a retired senior bureaucrat, following a violent midnight confrontation on the Ganeshguri Road in Guwahati. The incident, which centered on allegations of public hooliganism and the brandishing of a firearm, has sparked significant public concern due to the high-profile nature of the accused. Among those taken into custody is Veidic Modi, identified as the son of retired District Commissioner Bibhas Modi, who is accused of orchestrating chaos alongside several associates and bouncers on the city’s main thoroughfare.

The altercations reportedly began around midnight under the Ganeshguri flyover when a verbal spat broke out between a group of three individuals and a local food vendor. According to police sources, the situation escalated when a young man named Deke Basumatary and his friend arrived in the area for dinner. After finishing their meal, Basumatary’s friend was allegedly pushed by the trio, triggering a physical clash between the two parties. The situation worsened when the three-member group called for reinforcements to the scene.

Witnesses and police reports indicate that shortly after the call for support, several youths arrived at the location in luxury vehicles and on Bullet motorcycles. This backup group allegedly launched a physical assault on Basumatary and his companion. The violence turned particularly dangerous when Basumatary was reportedly struck on the head with the magazine of a pistol, resulting in serious injuries. An FIR was subsequently lodged at the Dispur Police Station that same night, specifically naming Veidic Modi as the individual who allegedly used the pistol magazine to strike the victim multiple times.

Following the formal complaint, law enforcement moved swiftly to arrest seven suspects identified as Diganta Haloi, Washim Akhtar, Veidic Modi, Amit Bhumik, Jyotishman Borah, Jitu Barman, and Tanisha Sarba. The case has drawn intense scrutiny as it involves allegations of threatening a businessman at gunpoint and engaging in blatant street violence in a prominent area of the city. While the investigation remains ongoing, the authorities are currently working to establish the full sequence of events that led to the midnight brawl.6
