Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Assam on February 14 to attend an airshow and inaugurate development projects worth over Rs 5,450 crore, aimed at enhancing connectivity, digital infrastructure, higher education, and urban mobility across the North-Eastern Region.
The Prime Minister will arrive at around 10:30 AM at the Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) on Moran Bypass in Dibrugarh, where he will witness an aerial display featuring fighter jets, transport planes, and helicopters. Developed in coordination with the Indian Air Force, the ELF is the first of its kind in Northeast India. Designed as dual-use infrastructure, it can accommodate both military and civilian aircraft during emergencies, including fighter aircraft up to 40 tonnes and transport aircraft up to 74 tonnes. The facility is expected to play a key role in disaster response and strategic operations in the region.
At approximately 1 PM, Prime Minister Modi will inspect the newly constructed Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu across the Brahmaputra River. Built at a cost of around Rs 3,030 crore, the six-lane extradosed Prestressed Concrete (PSC) bridge connects Guwahati with North Guwahati, reducing travel time to about seven minutes. The bridge incorporates advanced base isolation technology with friction pendulum bearings, high-performance stay cables, and a Bridge Health Monitoring System (BHMS) for real-time condition monitoring and enhanced safety, addressing the region’s high seismic vulnerability.
Later in the afternoon, at Lachit Ghat in Guwahati, the Prime Minister will inaugurate and flag off multiple development initiatives. Key projects include the National Data Centre for the Northeastern Region at Amingaon, Kamrup district. The state-of-the-art facility, with a sanctioned load of 8.5 MW and average rack capacity of 10 kW, will host critical government applications and serve as a Disaster Recovery centre for other national data centres, strengthening the region’s digital infrastructure under the Digital India initiative.
Prime Minister Modi will also inaugurate the permanent campus of the Indian Institute of Management Guwahati, providing a significant boost to higher education and management studies in the Northeast. Additionally, he will flag off 225 electric buses under the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme across Guwahati, Nagpur, Bhavnagar, and Chandigarh. The initiative is expected to benefit over 50 lakh citizens, offering clean, affordable, and reliable urban transport services while promoting sustainable mobility.
The Prime Minister’s visit underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening infrastructure, digital connectivity, and urban development in Assam, while also showcasing the strategic and technological advancements in the region.
