Priyanka Gandhi Attacks BJP in Guwahati Rally, Flags Crimes Against Women and Youth Unemployment in Assam

Guwahati, Feb 20: Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on February 19 launched a sharp attack on the BJP during a public rally in Guwahati, raising concerns over rising crimes against women and growing unemployment among youth in states governed by the party.

Addressing supporters in the Assam capital, Gandhi criticised what she described as the BJP’s practice of distributing cash assistance to women ahead of elections while failing to ensure their safety and long-term economic security. She questioned whether women had received adequate protection over the past five years and asked how many had been supported in achieving financial independence through employment opportunities.

“Are young people getting jobs here?” she asked the gathering. “Wherever there’s a BJP government, they send money to women before elections. But were those women given security in those five years? Crime is on the rise here. How many women were given jobs in those five years? How many women were helped to stand on their own feet?”

Gandhi further alleged that welfare measures were being used as distractions from deeper governance issues. She claimed that the wealth of the state was being diverted from the public to benefit a single ruling family, accusing the BJP of attempting to shift attention away from what she termed systemic problems.

Earlier in the day, Gandhi unveiled a 20-point “chargesheet” against the government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The document was prepared by a committee headed by MP Pradyut Bordoloi and was released at the Manvendra Sharma Complex. According to the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, the chargesheet outlines a series of allegations against the BJP government ahead of the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.

APCC president Gaurav Gogoi told party workers that Gandhi’s visit underscored the Congress party’s preparedness for the electoral battle. He highlighted her leadership of the Screening Committee and said the rally demonstrated the party’s resolve as it gears up for the polls.
