Guwahati, March 18: Senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on March 18 described the resignation of Assam MP Pradyut Bordoloi from the Indian National Congress as “very unfortunate”, indicating that discontent over ticket allocation for the upcoming Assembly elections may have led to his decision.
Speaking to reporters, Priyanka Gandhi said the party leadership regretted not having the opportunity to engage with Bordoloi before his resignation. She suggested that his dissatisfaction over a particular ticket decision may have contributed to his exit and expressed that a dialogue could have helped address the issue.
Bordoloi, a veteran Congress leader, stepped down citing prolonged neglect and internal mistreatment within the party. In an emotional statement, he said the move marked a painful departure from an organisation he had been associated with for decades. He alleged that he faced repeated instances of disrespect from within the party, particularly in Assam, and claimed that even the leadership failed to extend support, leaving him feeling increasingly isolated.
The resignation comes amid ongoing internal churn in the Assam Congress unit and follows closely after the exit of former state party chief Bhupen Kumar Borah. The development has added to concerns over organisational cohesion ahead of the Assembly elections.
Adding another dimension to the situation, the Congress has fielded Bordoloi’s son, Prateek Bordoloi, from the Margherita constituency, drawing attention in the context of the senior leader’s grievances over ticket distribution.
According to the Election Commission of India, polling for all 126 Assembly constituencies in Assam will be held in a single phase on April 9, with counting scheduled for May 4.
As the Bharatiya Janata Party eyes a third consecutive term, the Congress faces the dual challenge of addressing internal dissent while attempting to strengthen its position in what is expected to be a closely watched electoral contest.
