Guwahati, Feb 16: With political activity intensifying ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, the Congress party has stepped up its preparations, with senior leadership set to engage directly in strategy and candidate selection. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, National General Secretary of the Indian National Congress and MP from Wayanad, will undertake a two-day visit to Guwahati on February 18 and 19 to oversee crucial discussions.
The party has confirmed that Priyanka Gandhi will preside over meetings of the screening committee constituted for Assam, signalling a decisive phase in the Congress’s election preparations. She is scheduled to arrive at the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee headquarters, Rajiv Bhawan, on February 18, where a series of high-level consultations have been planned.
Her first engagement will be with the screening committee, which she heads for Assam. The panel is responsible for assessing prospective candidates and finalising a shortlist for the Assembly polls. Following this, she will participate in a meeting of the state Congress political affairs committee.
The day’s schedule includes consecutive discussions with chairpersons of state Congress committees, party MLAs, district Congress unit presidents, leaders of the party’s four frontal organisations, and the leader of the Congress Legislative Party in Assam. Party sources indicated that the deliberations are likely to extend until around 10 pm, after which she will stay overnight in Guwahati.
On February 19, Priyanka Gandhi will resume consultations in the morning with Assam Congress working presidents, Members of Parliament, and representatives of various party cells and departments. Later in the afternoon, she is slated to visit the Manabendra Sarma Complex to interact with block Congress committee presidents and other organisational office-bearers from across the state.
As Assam moves closer to the Assembly elections, the Congress has formally initiated its candidate selection process across constituencies, with the leadership’s visit underscoring the party’s focus on strengthening its organisational groundwork ahead of the electoral contest.
