Guwahati, February 19: Priyanka Gandhi Vadra arrived in Guwahati on Wednesday for a two-day visit aimed at accelerating the party’s preparations for the forthcoming Assembly elections in Assam.
Soon after landing at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Borjhar, she visited the revered Kamakhya Temple and offered prayers. She later proceeded to Assam Pradesh Congress Committee headquarters at Rajiv Bhawan to chair a series of meetings related to the screening of candidates.
As chairperson of the Congress Screening Committee and Member of Parliament from Wayanad, she oversaw what party leaders described as an unprecedented and structured screening exercise in the state. Senior functionaries said it marked the first time the party had undertaken such a comprehensive and consultative candidate selection process in Assam.
Party leaders stated that she was expected to make multiple visits in the coming months to review progress, assess ground feedback and strengthen coordination between the state unit and the central leadership.
The Congress aimed to complete the screening process at the earliest, with indications that the first phase of candidates could be announced by the end of February following consultations with the central leadership. State leaders asserted that the party was ahead of its rivals in organisational readiness and candidate identification as the Assembly elections approached.
