Tamarhat: Several organisations representing the Deshi community—Deshi Janagoshthiya Mancha, Deshi Yuva Chatra Mancha and Sadou Asom Deshi Jatiyo Parishad—staged a protest on Thursday in front of Tamarhat Police Station, alleging atrocities and intimidation against Deshi residents in Belpara Char under Tamarhat Police Station.
Thousands of men and women gathered at the protest site, where they staged a sit-in demonstration that partially blocked National Highway 127(B). Protesters held banners and placards demanding security for the Deshi community, action against alleged land encroachers, and departmental inquiry into police officials whom they accused of negligence. Slogans were raised calling for arrests of individuals allegedly involved in land-related disputes.

According to the protesting organisations, residents of Belpara Char—who they say have been living in the area for generations—were threatened between December 9 and 11 by a large group allegedly attempting to take control of cultivated land. Protesters claimed that crops across nearly 20 bighas were damaged during the incident. They submitted a memorandum demanding legal action and protection for local residents.
As tensions rose, Golokganj Sub-Divisional Police Officer Karabi Bania reached the site to monitor the situation. Later, an Executive Magistrate from Dhubri district arrived, received the memorandum and assured that the issues raised would be examined as per law. Following this assurance, the protesters withdrew their blockade.
Officials noted that land disputes had occurred between groups in the area earlier as well. Police have stated that they will investigate all allegations submitted in the memorandum.
