Protesters Rally in Dhekiajuli Demanding ST Recognition for Tea Tribes and Adivasis

Dhekiajuli: More than two lakh people gathered in Dhekiajuli on Thursday, urging the government to grant Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to Assam’s tea tribe and Adivasi communities. The massive rally saw protesters marching through the town with banners, slogans, and passionate chants, highlighting their long-standing demands.

The protest was jointly organized by the All Assam Tea Tribes Students’ Association (AATSA), All Assam Adivasi Students’ Association (AASA), Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha, Chah Janajati Mahila Samiti, Adivasi Mahila Samiti, and other local organizations. Key demands included ST recognition, issuance of land pattas, and increased daily wages for tea garden workers.

Community leaders addressing the crowd accused the government of repeatedly neglecting their legitimate demands, warning that such disregard could have political consequences in the 2026 Assembly elections. They noted that successive governments had promised reforms before elections but failed to implement them.

The rally also highlighted the socio-economic hardships faced by tea garden laborers and Adivasi workers, including low wages, lack of land rights, and limited access to education and healthcare. Organizers stressed that ST recognition is vital for social justice and equitable development for these marginalized communities, which have contributed significantly to Assam’s economy.

The protest concluded peacefully, with leaders vowing to continue their agitation until the government takes concrete steps to address their demands.
