Punjab, Jan 6: For generations, government schools in India were often viewed as a fallback option, chosen mainly by families who could not afford private education. Punjab is now working to overturn that long-standing perception through its ambitious Schools of Eminence programme, which aims to transform selected government schools into high-quality institutions offering modern, student-friendly education.
Under the initiative, the Punjab Government has announced the development of 117 Schools of Eminence across the state. Existing government schools are being upgraded with advanced infrastructure and academic facilities, ensuring that students in both urban centres and rural areas receive the same standard of education. The programme is designed to make quality schooling accessible regardless of a child’s socio-economic background.
Students enrolled in these schools benefit from facilities that were once largely limited to elite private institutions. Classrooms are equipped with smart boards and digital learning tools, while dedicated laboratories for science, mathematics and computers support practical learning. Libraries have been upgraded, sports facilities expanded, and spaces for art, music and skill development introduced, all housed within safe, clean and modern campuses. Many students say the improved environment has made learning more engaging and enjoyable, fostering a renewed sense of pride in attending government schools.
To address challenges related to distance and accessibility, the government has also introduced free bus transport for students of Schools of Eminence. This initiative has been particularly beneficial for children from villages who previously struggled to travel long distances to attend school. Officials say the transport facility has led to improved attendance and a noticeable reduction in dropout rates, ensuring that students remain consistent in their studies.
Beyond academics, the Schools of Eminence focus on holistic development. Students are encouraged to participate in sports, debates, cultural activities, science exhibitions and skill-based programmes. The broader goal is to prepare them not only for board examinations but also for competitive exams, higher education and modern career paths that demand well-rounded skills.
For many families, the initiative has eased the financial burden associated with private schooling. Parents from middle- and lower-income households say their children now have access to facilities that match or exceed those of private schools, without the associated costs. This shift is seen as a significant step toward social equity in education.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has described the Schools of Eminence as central to Punjab’s education reform agenda. He has repeatedly stated that talent exists in every child, irrespective of geography or income, and that the state’s responsibility is to provide equal opportunities for all. According to him, the programme is designed to help students realise their potential by giving them the resources they deserve.
With upgraded infrastructure, supportive services like free transport, and an emphasis on comprehensive development, Punjab’s Schools of Eminence are setting a new benchmark for government education. The initiative signals a broader transformation in public schooling, one that seeks to build confidence among students and parents alike while shaping a stronger future for the next generation.
