Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday, July 27, called for a permanent and science-based flood management system in Assam, saying the recurring devastation caused by floods required stronger preventive measures, early warning systems and long-term rehabilitation.
Expressing grief over the loss of lives, Gandhi described the flood deaths as “extremely heartbreaking” and offered his deepest condolences to the bereaved families. He also expressed sympathy for the millions of people affected by the disaster.
Gandhi said he expected both the state and Central governments to spare no effort in carrying out rescue and relief operations for those affected.
Pointing to the recurring nature of Assam’s flood crisis, he said floods struck the state every year, causing extensive loss of life and property and leaving many families devastated. He said the time had come to establish a robust and sustainable system that scientifically prioritised prevention, early warning systems, strong infrastructure and rehabilitation.
His remarks came as Assam’s flood death toll rose to 68. According to officials, more than 5.24 lakh people remained affected across five districts, although the overall flood situation had improved.
A total of 354 relief camps and aid distribution centres were operating in four districts, providing shelter and assistance to 37,724 displaced people.
Multiple agencies, including the Army, National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, Fire and Emergency Services and the police, continued rescue and relief operations across the affected areas.
Officials said embankments, roads, bridges and other public infrastructure had also suffered damage in several districts due to the floods.
