Guwahati: Congress leader and MP Rahul Gandhi on Friday visited the residence of singer Zubeen Garg in Guwahati to pay his respects and called for a transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the artist’s death.
Speaking to the media after meeting Garg’s family, Gandhi expressed deep sorrow over the loss, saying, “It’s very sad for me to come here under these circumstances. I would have liked to visit under happier conditions.”
Drawing a personal connection, he reminisced about his mountaineering days in Sikkim, comparing Zubeen Garg to Mount Kanchenjunga — “honest, transparent, unshakable, and beautiful” — qualities he said mirrored the singer’s life and legacy.
Highlighting Garg’s humility despite his fame, Gandhi remarked, “You can see the worth of a person in their house. Zubeen had wealth, success, and humility — something Assam should be extremely proud of.” He also praised Garg’s family for nurturing his talent and giving a voice to the people of Assam.
Gandhi stressed the importance of truth and closure for both the singer’s family and his admirers across the state. “The family has lost Zubeen, and all they want is the truth to be clear. The people of Assam want to know what happened because they want closure,” he said.
Urging the government to ensure a swift and transparent probe, Gandhi said clarity about the incident in Singapore was crucial for justice. He reaffirmed the Congress party’s solidarity with Garg’s family and extended condolences to the people of Assam.
Concluding his address, Gandhi stated, “We love Zubeen Garg, we want to honour him, but first we want transparency and justice. What happened in Singapore — everybody in Assam should know, and the sooner it happens, the better it is.”
