Guwahati: Rail connectivity in Mizoram has reached a significant milestone with the arrival of the Bharat Gaurav Deluxe AC Tourist Train at Sairang Railway Station for the first time on February 12 under the “North East Discovery” circuit. Carrying 81 tourists from across India and abroad, including the United States and Nepal, the train’s arrival highlights Mizoram’s rising profile on the national and international tourism map.
The development follows the inauguration of the 51.38-km Bairabi–Sairang Railway Line by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 13 last year, a moment widely seen as transformative for the state. Over the past six months, improved accessibility has led to a steady rise in tourist inflow, boosting employment in hospitality and allied sectors while promoting eco-tourism and cultural tourism.

Since the start of regular train services in September 2025, public response has been overwhelming. The Sairang–Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express has recorded occupancy levels exceeding 147 percent and 154 percent in both directions. Other services, including the Sairang–Guwahati and Sairang–Kolkata Express trains, have also reported occupancy above 100 percent. On February 9, 2026, a new Sairang–Silchar train was flagged off, strengthening connectivity with the Barak Valley.
Freight operations have also gained momentum, with movement of cement, construction materials, essential commodities, and automobiles, including the first rake carrying 119 passenger vehicles. The Northeast Frontier Railway has further introduced parcel and refrigerated logistics services to support farmers and traders. Officials said enhanced rail infrastructure will continue to act as a catalyst for inclusive growth and long-term socio-economic development in Mizoram and the wider Northeast.
