Railway connectivity transforms Mizoram; first FCI cargo train reaches Sairang

Guwahati: Railway connectivity is bringing significant transformation to Mizoram with the expansion of passenger and freight train services, improving transportation, strengthening supply chains and boosting tourism in the state. In a historic development, the first-ever Food Corporation of India (FCI) foodgrain cargo train arrived at Sairang Railway Station on March 3. The rake consisted of 42 wagons carrying about 25,900 quintals of rice from Punjab. The cargo was received by Mizoram’s Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister B. Lalchhanzova along with K. Vanlalvena, Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha. Officials said the development marks a major step towards strengthening rail-based logistics and ensuring efficient distribution of essential commodities.

The progress follows the inauguration of the 51.38-km Bairabi–Sairang railway line by Narendra Modi on September 13, 2025, which connected Aizawl to the national railway network for the first time. Rail connectivity has also given a boost to tourism. The arrival of the Bharat Gaurav Deluxe AC Tourist Train at Sairang in February under the “North East Discovery” circuit brought 81 tourists from India and abroad, highlighting the state’s growing appeal.

Passenger services have witnessed strong demand, with trains such as the Sairang–Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express and Sairang–Guwahati Express recording full occupancy. Freight operations have also expanded steadily, with more than 30 freight rakes carrying cement, automobiles, fertilizers and construction materials handled at Sairang Terminal since September 2025. Officials say the growing railway network is expected to further accelerate economic growth and regional integration in the state.
