Railway Minister Approves Road Over Bridge at Malahar–Samsi

Guwahati: In a significant boost to regional infrastructure, the Minister for Railways has accorded approval for the construction of a modern Road Over Bridge (ROB) to replace Level Crossing Gate No. 101 located at km 198/8–9 between Malahar Halt and Samsi stations under the Katihar Division of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR). The approval clears the way for the early execution of the project, which will be undertaken at a revised estimated cost of ₹177 crore with 100 per cent funding by the Railways. The initiative reflects the Railways’ continued commitment to strengthening infrastructure, improving safety and enhancing public convenience across the network.

The existing level crossing is situated in a high-traffic area witnessing substantial vehicular movement. As per the traffic census conducted in July 2024, the Traffic Vehicle Units (TVU) at the location stand at 4,21,001, underscoring the urgent need for grade separation to ensure smoother traffic flow and enhanced safety for both road users and train operations. Keeping local traffic requirements in view, the project envisages the construction of a Road Over Bridge at the existing level crossing to cater to local movement. In addition, an extra ROB will be built at a diversion point to efficiently manage city traffic as well as through traffic, ensuring uninterrupted and seamless movement.

Upon completion, the project is expected to significantly improve road and rail safety while easing congestion in the Malahar–Samsi section of Malda district in West Bengal. The improved connectivity will benefit students, daily commuters and local traders by providing safer and quicker access to educational institutions, workplaces and markets. The project is also expected to support economic growth and regional development, reaffirming Northeast Frontier Railway’s focus on modernisation and passenger-centric infrastructure development.
