Raju Bista Backs ST Status Demand at Sikkim Event

Gangtok, Feb 26: Raju Bista on Thursday, February 26 expressed strong support for the Scheduled Tribe (ST) status demand of several Gorkha communities while addressing the 31st Foundation Day celebration of the Akhil Sikkim Khas Chettri-Bahun Kalyan Sangh in Sikkim.

Speaking at the programme attended by members of the Khas Chettri-Bahun community and other guests, Bista praised Sikkim’s development and said that under Chief Minister Prem Singh Golay, the state has made visible progress and emerged as a model of focused governance.

Describing Sikkim and Darjeeling as “one extended family”, Bista said the people share common language, culture and traditions despite administrative boundaries. He stressed the need for unity, noting that the Gorkha population in India is small compared to the country’s overall population.

On the ST status demand, Bista said it is rooted in constitutional rights. Referring to historical records, he claimed that the community was listed as Hill Tribes in the 1941 Census but the status was later removed. He said that while seven out of 18 communities have received ST recognition over time, 11 communities—including Khas, Gurung, Newar and Bhujel—are still awaiting recognition. He asserted that the demand was not an appeal for favour but a rightful claim.

Bista also informed that on December 12, 2025, the Sikkim government constituted a high-level committee to examine the matter and that a proposal has been passed in the state Assembly and forwarded to the Centre. He added that multiple representations from Darjeeling have been submitted and discussions are in the final stage.

Addressing concerns over a possible influx from Nepal if ST status is granted, Bista dismissed the claims, stating that border security is the responsibility of the Central Government and security forces. Referring to recent remarks allegedly labelling some Sikkimese as foreigners, he said such statements hurt sentiments and urged the youth to preserve their language and culture. He assured continued efforts for justice for the people of Sikkim, Darjeeling and the Dooars.
