Agartala, March 18: Rampada Jamatia was elected unopposed as the Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly on March 18, securing unanimous backing from members across party lines during the ongoing session.
The result was announced by Acting Speaker Ramprasad Paul, who said three proposals had been submitted in support of Jamatia’s candidature. The nominations were moved by Chief Minister Manik Saha and supported by MLA Swapna Das Paul, by Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma with backing from Tipra Motha MLA Chitta Ranjan Debbarma, and by Cooperation Minister Shukla Charan Noatia, supported by Chief Whip Kalyani Saha Roy.
Following scrutiny of the proposals, the motion was placed before the House and, in the absence of any opposition or rival nominations, Jamatia was declared elected unanimously. He had filed his nomination a day earlier before Assembly Secretary AK Nath.
Leaders from both treasury and opposition benches congratulated the newly elected Speaker. Among those who extended their greetings were Chief Minister Manik Saha, Chief Whip Kalyani Saha Roy, Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury, Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma and Congress MLA Birajit Sinha.
Addressing the House, the Chief Minister described Jamatia as an experienced public figure with a background in politics and social service, expressing confidence that he would uphold neutrality in his role and contribute to strengthening the Assembly’s functioning.
Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury also welcomed the development, recalling his long association with Jamatia and expressing hope that the Speaker would ensure opportunities for all members, including those in the Opposition, while maintaining the dignity of the House.
