Assam Education Minister Dr Ranoj Pegu on January 2 attended a programme at the headquarters of the Tiwa Autonomous Council in Morigaon, where statues of Raja Bir Jongal Balhu and Indraching Deuri—two revered figures of the Tiwa community—were unveiled.
Raja Bir Jongal Balhu is remembered as a symbol of the valour and bravery of the Tiwa people, while Indraching Deuri is regarded as the father of the Tiwa community. The unveiling marked the fulfilment of a long-pending demand of the Tiwa Autonomous Council.
A grand public meeting was organised on the occasion, along with the foundation stone laying ceremony for a proposed auditorium at the council premises.
The event was attended by Chief Executive Member of the Tiwa Autonomous Council Jiban Chandra Konwar, Morigaon District Commissioner Anamika Tewari, former Chief Executive Member and present council member Pravan Manta, Zila Parishad President Pranati Kalita Deka, Tiwa Rajdarbar President Jursing Bordoloi, Mayor Jugesh Tamuli, along with council officials, Tiwa kings and representatives from various regions.
A large number of members of the Tiwa community from across the district and neighbouring areas also participated in the programme.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Pegu spoke on issues related to the Tiwa community and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to the development of the Tiwa Autonomous Council. He later laid the foundation stone for the auditorium and announced a grant of ₹1 crore for its modern and improved construction.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the event, the education minister said the government’s objective was to maintain unity and harmony among the people of Assam. He asserted that there was no animosity, conflict or protest among communities in the state, attributing the prevailing harmony to the policies and governance approach of the NDA government.
Officials said the programme highlighted the rich cultural heritage of the Tiwa community and underscored ongoing efforts to strengthen institutional infrastructure for its development.
